Woodrow Tracy "Woody" Harrelson (born July 23, 1961) is an American actor. He first became known for his role as bartender Woody Boyd on the NBC sitcom Cheers (1985–1993), for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series from five nominations. Harrelson received three Academy Award nominations: Best Actor for The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), and Best Supporting Actor for The Messenger (2009) and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017).
Other notable films include White Men Can't Jump (1992), Natural Born Killers (1994), The Thin Red Line (1998), No Country for Old Men (2007), Seven Pounds (2008), Zombieland (2009), Seven Psychopaths (2012), Now You See Me (2013), The Edge of Seventeen (2016), War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), and Triangle of Sadness (2022). He also played Haymitch Abernathy in The Hunger Games film series (2012–2015).
Harrelson received further Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his portrayal of Steve Schmidt in the HBO film Game Change (2012) and a detective in the HBO crime anthology series True Detective (2014). He also portrayed E. Howard Hunt in the HBO political limited series White House Plumbers (2023).
Harrelson made his SNL (and hosting) debut on Saturday Night Live on November 18, 1989, the sixth episode and Thanksgiving-themed show of Season 15, with musical guest David Byrne.
Harrelson returned to hosting Saturday Night Live for the 2nd time on May 16, 1992, which is the Season 17 finale, with musical guest Vanessa Williams. This marked the final episode for then-longtime cast member Victoria Jackson (at the time, Jacckson became the longest serving female cast member, with a total of six seasons on the show. She was later surpassed by Molly Shannon in season 26).
Harrelson returned to host Saturday Night Live again for the 3rd time and his first appearance in 22 years, 5 months and 30 days on November 15, 2014, the sixth episode of Season 40, with musical guest Kendrick Lamar. Harrelson's The Hunger Games co-stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth appear in his 1989 opening monologue in this episode.
Harrelson returned to host Saturday Night Live again for the 4th time on September 28, 2019, which is the season premiere of Season 45, with musical guest Billie Eilish. This marked the first episode for current cast members Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang.
Harrelson returned to host Saturday Night Live once again for the 5th time on February 25, 2023, the thirteenth episode of Season 48 of Saturday Night Live, with musical guest Jack White, for his 5th musical guest stint, as well as his 4th solo musical guest appearance, thus making both of them five-timers to enter the Five-Timers Club on SNL.
Before the goodnights, longest-running cast member Kenan Thompson and actress Scarlett Johansson welcomed Harrelson and White to the Five-Timers Club and presenting their very own five-timers' jackets.
