The season premiere of Season 23 and the 427th episode of Saturday Night Live premiered on September 3, 1997. It was hosted by actor Sylvester Stallone, star of the hit films Cop Land, Antz, Get Carter, Driven, Grudge Match, Cobra, Over the Top, Tango and Cash, Cliffhanger, Judge Dredd, Rocky, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky V, Rocky Balboa, Creed and Creed II, Escape Plan, the Paramount+ reality series The Family Stallone and the hit comedy and crime drama series Tulsa King, with British funk and acid jazz band Jamiroquai as the musical guest. This is Stallone's hosting debut, and Jamiroquai's musical guest debut on SNL.

- Though not a cast member at the time, this was Tina Fey's first episode as a writer for the show.
- This episode also marked the first episode for Lukasz Gottwald as the then-current member of the Saturday Night Live Band. He plays the electric guitar, and joined at the beginning of the season, replacing Yoshiko Hirashige after 2½ years.
