The season premiere of Season 24 and 447th episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by actress Cameron Diaz with rock band The Smashing Pumpkins as her musical guest. It premiered on September 26, 1998. This is Cameron Diaz's hosting debut, and The Smashing Pumpkins made their 3rd musical guest stint on the show.
This is the first episode for cast members Jimmy Fallon, Chris Parnell and Horatio Sanz (they are not credited as such, however, until the next episode).
Cameron Diaz's goodnights speech is "Hey Thanks to the Smashing Pumpkins, Dan Aykroyd, Steve Martin, John Goodman, Jonathan Richman, Tommy Larkins, to the Cast, Rock and Roll". (Cheers and applause)

Opening Montage | The opening montage had various colored bars were used. However, there are various striking differences between the two montages. Whereas the first one had all bars moved sideways in vertical positions, this one included bars moving from different directions in horizontal positions. Also, unlike the previous montage, shots of New York City were featured within the moving bars. The bars were also different colors. Interestingly, the theme music would be changed througout the first couple of episodes of the season. Finally, as opposed to the cast members/musical guest/host photos occupying the entire screen, they were represented in a small box in a beige color. Additionally, Jim Breuer is gone from the intro, as he was fired prior to this season.
