Michael Phelps hosted the season premiere of Season 34 and the 637th episode of Saturday Night Live, which premiered on September 13, 2008. The musical guest was rapper, singer and songwriter Lil Wayne. Lil Wayne made his 2nd appearance and also his first time as the musical guest, as well as the only time as host on SNL for Michael Phelps. This marked the earliest season premiere in the show's history.

This marked the first episode for Bobby Moynihan as a cast member.

Sketches[]

A Non-Partisan Message from Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. Hillary Clinton[]

The opening sketch had Tina Fey return as Sarah Palin (unsurprisingly), and Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton. This is definitely a notable sketch, and in that case is noted here.

Opening Montage[]

The opening montage is in black and white, while the cast credits remain in color. The "SNL" logo and the cast credits appear smaller to fit into the 4:3 "safe area". In the second episode of the season, the video for Casey Wilson's credit was changed.

Michael Phelps' Monologue[]

A flag-waving Debbie Phelps (Amy Poehler) cheers on her son Michael Phelps as he does his opening monologue. Phelps then introduces his new show, Swim Cop, and William Shatner shows up to give him endorsement advice.
