Season 24 of Saturday Night Live began on September 26, 1998, hosted by actress Cameron Diaz with musical guests The Smashing Pumpkins and ended on May 15, 1999, hosted by actress Sarah Michelle Gellar with musical guests Backstreet Boys.
Before the start of the season, longtime cast member Norm Macdonald, who had been on the show since 1993, was fired in the second-half of the previous season, after five seasons total with the show, as well as fellow cast member Jim Breuer, who had been a cast member for three seasons since 1995, was fired from the show.
Following Macdonald and Breuer's departure, the show added three new featured players: stand-up comedian Jimmy Fallon, Chris Parnell, a performer with The Groundlings in Los Angeles, and Upright Citizens Brigade and Second City performer Horatio Sanz. Fallon, Parnell, and Sanz were all upgraded to repertory status at the beginning of the following season.
Following the finale, no changes were made to the cast, and everyone returned for the next season.
The New York footage is back, but the cast is still on with still photos. They will go back to film feed on Season 26.
