Season 19 premiered on September 25, 1993 with host Charles Barkley and musical guest, Nirvana and ended on May 14, 1994 with host Heather Locklear and musical guest Janet Jackson. This season concluded with the cast singing "So Long, Farewell".
Longtime cast member Dana Carvey had left the show in the middle of the previous season. Chris Rock and Robert Smigel also left the show at the end of the previous season.
The previous system of dividing the cast into three tiers was abolished, with all five members of the middle category (Ellen Cleghorne, Melanie Hutsell, Tim Meadows, Adam Sandler and David Spade) were all upgraded to repertory status this season. Stand-up comics Norm MacDonald, Jay Mohr, and Sarah Silverman were hired as writers and made several appearances during monologues, before being added to the cast as featured players. Veteran comic actor Michael McKean also joined the cast mid-season as a repertory cast member. At age 46, McKean was the oldest person to join the cast of the show, a distinction he held until Leslie Jones became a cast member (at age 47) in 2014.
This would be the final season for longtime cast members: Phil Hartman (a cast member since 1986), Rob Schneider and Julia Sweeney (both cast members since 1990), and Melanie Hutsell (a cast member since 1991), who departed at the end of the season. It was also Silverman's only season on the show.
