Carole Penelope "Penny" Marshall (October 15, 1943 – December 17, 2018) is an American actress, producer and director best known for her role as Laverne De Fazio on the ABC sitcom Laverne & Shirley from 1976 to 1983, for directing films such as Big (1988), Awakenings (1990) and A League of Their Own (1992) and for producing films such as Cinderella Man and Bewitched (both in 2005). She appeared on Saturday Night Live as a special guest on October 25, 1975, on the February 20, 1977 "Mardi Gras" special and on December 14, 1996.
She was referenced by name in the "Big Outtakes" sketch shown in the October 8, 1988 show and was impersonated by Rosie O'Donnell on the November 13, 1993 episode during the "Malibu Fires" sketch, was impersonated by Maya Rudolph on the October 14, 2000 episode during the "Rabun to Shuri" sketch and by Fred Armisen from September 20, 2008 to October 6, 2012.
