One Direction is a British-Irish boy band from London, England, consisting of Niall Horan (born September 13, 1993), Zayn Malik (born January 12, 1993), Liam Payne (born August 29, 1993), Harry Styles (born February 1, 1994) and Louis Tomlinson (born December 24, 1991), who are best known for placing third in the British competition series The X Factor before being propelled to global success.

They made their musical guest debut on Saturday Night Live on April 7, 2012, the eighteenth episode of Season 37, hosted by Modern Family star Sofía Vergara, where they performed singles from their first studio album, Up All Night, "What Makes You Beautiful" and "One Thing" and also appeared in "The Manuel Ortiz Show" sketch.

They returned to Saturday Night Live for their 2nd musical guest appearance on December 7, 2013, the eighth episode of Season 39, hosted by actor Paul Rudd in support of their third studio album, Midnight Memories. They performed "Story of My Life" and "Through the Dark" and appeared in the "One Direction's #1 Fan" sketch alongside host Paul Rudd.

They returned to Saturday Night Live for their 3rd and final musical guest appearance on December 20, 2014, the tenth episode and the Christmas show of Season 40, hosted by actress Amy Adams, in support of their fourth studio album, Four. They performed "Ready to Run" and "Night Changes" and appeared in the "Girlfriends Talk Show" sketch as a high school dance team.

One Direction member Harry Styles was the first of the band to appear on the show as a solo musical guest in 2017, followed by bandmate Niall Horan in 2019. In 2019, Styles returned pulling double duty as musical guest and host on November 16, 2019 and Horan returned to made his solo musical guest debut on December 14, 2019.
