Trivia[]

  • Prior to this episode, Tina Fey had been a writer on the show for the past three seasons, and became the head writer the previous season, a position that she still held as she took on the Weekend Update gig.
  • This is also the first episode of the fifth generation of SNL; with a new look for Weekend Update, a new intro, 3 longtime cast members (Meadows, Oteri, Quinn) gone from last season, as well as some newer cast members (Fallon, Parnell, Sanz, Dratch, Rudolph, etc.), coming into their own on the show, some longtime staff members retiring, as well as the whole new look for Weekend Update.
  • This was the first episode for current stage manager Chris Kelly (not to be confused with future/former SNL head writer Chris Kelly), who replaced the retiring Bob van Ry, who retired at the end of the previous season.
  • This was the first episode back for former writer Jim Downey after a two-year hiatus, after he was previously fired for producing Norm Macdonald's Weekend Update run.
  • Lastly, this was also the first episode for writer James Anderson.
