The 970th episode and 2nd episode of Saturday Night Live's 50th season premiered on October 5, 2024, hosted by legendary stand-up comedian Nate Bargatze, the host of a weekly comedy podcast Nateland and four of his comedy specials: Full Time Magic, The Tennessee Kid, The Greatest Average American and Hello World, his first album "Yelled at by a Clown", he was also a part of Netflix's comedy collection "The Standups" and currently touring the U.S. of a standup set "Be Funny" Comedy Tour, with musical guests Coldplay, a legendary British pop rock band. Bargatze previously hosted SNL on the October 28, 2023 episode, the third episode and Halloween-themed show of SNL's 49th season, with musical guests the Foo Fighters, a legendary rock band. This is Nate Bargatze's 2nd time as the host and Coldplay made their 8th musical guest appearance on SNL.

Coldplay previously made their 7th musical guest appearances on SNL on the following dates: On April 7, 2001, the sixteenth episode of SNL's 26th season, hosted by actor Alec Baldwin, on May 21, 2005, which is the Season 30 finale, hosted by actress Lindsay Lohan, on October 25, 2008, the sixth episode and Halloween-themed show of SNL's 34th season, hosted by actor Jon Hamm, on November 12, 2011, the sixth episode of SNL's 37th season, hosted by actress Emma Stone, on May 3, 2014, the nineteenth episode of SNL's 39th season, hosted by British and American actor Andrew Garfield, which making them a former five-time musical guest.

On November 2, 2019, the fifth episode of SNL's 45th season, hosted by actress Kristen Stewart. An honorable mention, bandleader Chris Martin was the musical guest for the April 11, 2020 episode, which was the first SNL at Home episode, from later in that season, that episode was hosted by actor Tom Hanks. Which later lead to the full band making their first appearance in nearly half a decade and on February 4, 2023, the thirteenth episode of SNL's 48th season, hosted by Chilean and American actor Pedro Pascal, star of the Netflix crime series Narcos, Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian and the spin-off series The Book of Boba Fett and the HBO's hit post-apocalyptic drama series The Last of Us.
