The 2nd episode of Season 40 and the 769th episode of Saturday Night Live premiered on October 4, 2014, hosted by former short-time cast member Sarah Silverman with musical guest Maroon 5, a pop rock band. This is Maroon 5's 5th musical guest appearance on SNL, thus making Maroon 5 a former five-time musical guest and the first-time hosting for Sarah Silverman.
Maroon 5 previously made their 4th musical guest appearances on SNL on the following dates: On February 21, 2004, the thirteenth episode of Season 29, hosted by pop sensation, singer and songwriter Christina Aguilera, and on May 19, 2007, which this is the Season 32 finale, hosted by actor Zach Braff, star of the NBC/ABC's classic comedy series Scrubs.
On November 5, 2011, the fifth episode of SNL's 37th season, hosted by the actor Charlie Day, the co-created, executive producer, writer and star of the FX and later FXX's hit sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and on November 17, 2012, the eighth episode and Thanksgiving show of SNL's 38th season, hosted by actor Jeremy Renner, star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Avengers: Endgame, and Disney+ miniseries Hawkeye and Paramount+ crime thriller series Mayor of Kingstown.
Levine also previously hosted SNL on January 26, 2013, the twelfth episode of SNL's 38th season, with musical guest Kendrick Lamar.
