The 894th episode and 5th episode of Saturday Night Live's 46th season premiered on October 31, 2020, hosted by former SNL writer, writing supervisor, and producer, stand-up comedian and actor John Mulaney, with musical guests The Strokes, making this the first episode to have premiered on Halloween since 1992, the fifth episode of Season 18, hosted by Canadian-American actress and comedian Catherine O'Hara, with musical guests 10,000 Maniacs. The Strokes were originally to returned to SNL and perform the previous season on April 11, 2020, but the episode was cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and was replaced with a Saturday Night Live At Home episode, hosted by actor Tom Hanks, with musical guest Chris Martin of the legendary British pop rock band Coldplay. This is John Mulaney's 4th time as the host, making him the most frequent former SNL writer to host the show, beating out Larry David twice, and the 4th musical guest appearance on SNL for The Strokes. This is also the Strokes' first appearance on SNL in almost nine years.

The last time The Strokes were the musical guest was on March 5, 2011, the sixteenth episode of SNL's 36th season, hosted by the actress and pop sensation, Miley Cyrus.
