The 951st episode and 3rd episode of Saturday Night Live's 49th season premiered on October 28, 2023, hosted by stand-up comedian Nate Bargatze, the host of a weekly comedy podcast Nateland and four of his comedy specials: Full Time Magic, The Tennessee Kid, The Greatest Average American and Hello World, his first album "Yelled at by a Clown", he was also a part of Netflix's comedy collection "The Standups" and currently touring the U.S. of a standup set "Be Funny" Comedy Tour, with the legendary rock band Foo Fighters as the musical guests. This was Nate Bargatze's first-time hosting SNL. This is also the 9th musical guest appearance for the Foo Fighters on SNL, as well as Dave Grohl's record 15th time as the musical guest. This is also the Foo Fighters' first appearance on SNL since the death of their longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins and the first musical guest stint for their new drummer Josh Freese.
The Foo Fighters were originally supposed to appear as the musical guests and performed on May 20, 2023, which is the Season 48 finale, hosted by actress Jennifer Coolidge, however it was cancelled due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America Strike happening that week.
The last time the Foo Fighters were the musical guests on November 7, 2020, the sixth episode and the second post-election episode of SNL's 46th season, hosted by legendary stand-up comedian and actor Dave Chappelle.
