The 931st episode and the season premiere of Saturday Night Live's 48th season premiered on October 1, 2022, hosted by actor Miles Teller, star of the hit films Whiplash, Thank You for Your Service, The Spectacular Now, the Divergent film trilogy, 21 & Over, That Awkward Moment, Fantastic Four, The Ark and the Aardvark, Spiderhead, Two Night Stand, Get a Job, War Dogs, Bleed for This, and Top Gun: Maverick, the Amazon Prime Video crime drama Too Old to Die Young and the Paramount+ miniseries The Offer, with rapper Kendrick Lamar as the musical guest. This was Miles Teller's hosting debut and the 3rd musical guest appearance for Kendrick Lamar on SNL.
This marked the first episode for new cast members: Marcello Hernandez, Molly Kearney, Michael Longfellow, and Devon Walker. Cecily Strong was not credited in the new opening montage, though she hadn't left the show; she was on leave to star of the Broadway play "The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe". This is the third-consecutive season Strong missed episodes of the season to appear in another project (after missing practically the first half of the 46th season and the January 2022 episodes of the previous season).
The last time Kendrick Lamar was the musical guest on November 15, 2014, the sixth episode of SNL's 40th season, hosted by actor Woody Harrelson, which he returned to host for the 3rd time and (his first appearance in 25 years, 4 months, and 6 days).
The goodnight speech for Miles Teller is "Thank You to Kendrick Lamar, Sampha, Jon Hamm, Shaun White, To My Family, Kelly My Wife and My Friends You Know Who You Are, I Love You Guys, Thank You to Lorne, the Cast, the Crew and the Band. - This episode aired concurrently on Peacock, with future episodes available one day after broadcast. It is the first episode to stream exclusively on Peacock since NBC’s prior next-day streaming rights deal with Hulu ended in mid-September.
- As of this episode, Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che are no longer head writers on the show (though they continue as regular writers, and of course, continue to anchor Weekend Update).
- Also, for the 48th season premiere, Kenan Thompson returns for his 20th season on the show. Thompson joined the cast way back in 2003.
- This is the first episode of the Eighth generation of SNL, as 10 cast members left within the past calendar year (8 of whom were longtime cast members), there's a new intro and logo, a change in head writers, a longtime producer and a longtime band member left, and there are 4 new cast members, this season.
- This is the first episode of season 48 to be produced in-studio since March 7, 2020, the fifteenth episode of Season 45, hosted by English actor Daniel Craig, with musical guest The Weeknd, where the current cast members, longtime former cast members, the band, hosts, guests, musical guests and the audience members are no longer wearing masks during the goodnights and the opening monologue.
- This also marked the first episode for Summer Camargo as the new member of the Saturday Night Live Band. She plays the trumpet, and joined at the beginning of the season, replacing longtime band trumpet player Earl Gardner (who retired after having been with the band for past 37 years).
- This is also even Jimmy Fowlie, Ceara O'Sullivan, Auguste White and KC Shornima's first episode as writers on SNL.
- Former SNL writer Gary Richardson (who previously wrote on the show from 2017 to 2021), returns to SNL, starting with this episode, after a one-year hiatus from the show.
