The 869th episode and 19th episode of Saturday Night Live's 44th season premiered on May 4, 2019, hosted by former longtime cast member Adam Sandler, star of the hit films, Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, The Wedding Singer, Big Daddy, Mr. Deeds, 50 First Dates, Anger Management, Airheads, You Don't Mess with the Zohan, Bedtime Stories, That's My Boy, Reign Over Me, Spanglish, Funny People, Punch-Drunk Love, Hubie Halloween, Grown Ups and its 2013 sequel Grown Ups 2, The Cobbler, Pixels, The Ridiculous 6, The Do-Over, Sandy Wexler, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), The Week Of, Murder Mystery, and its 2023 sequel Murder Mystery 2, Just Go With It, Jack and Jill, Blended, Uncut Gems, Hustle, You Are So Not Invited To My Bar Mitzvah and Spaceman and the animated films Eight Crazy Nights the Hotel Transylvania franchise and Leo, and his stand-up comedy specials What the Hell Happened to Me, Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh, and Adam Sandler: I Love You, with Candian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes as the musical guest. This was Adam Sandler's first time as host, making him the fourth Bad Boy in SNL history to come back and host the show, and Shawn Mendes made his 2nd musical guest appearance on SNL.
Shawn Mendes previously made his musical guest (and SNL) debut on December 3, 2016, the eighth episode of SNL's 42nd season, hosted by actress Emma Stone.
The long goodnights speech for Adam Sandler is "Yo, that was just a great time. I'll never forget it. Thank you so much. Thanks to Shawn Mendes (Cheers and applause). How about that guy? And Chris Rock for coming by. Kristen Wiig. So nice of her to come by. Jimmy Fallon. Thank you. Yo, I love that I know this cast now. I love these guys. They're great people. The Writers, thank you so much. Lorne, thank you for having me back. And I can't tell you, that really felt amazing. - This is Kate McKinnon's 150th episode as a cast member. She then became the longest running female cast member in the show's history; as she surpassed her former SNL castmate Vanessa Bayer as the longest serving female cast member in history.
- Prior to the goodnights, Sandler performs an unplugged musical tribute to his former castmate Chris Farley that was originally performed in his 2018 stand-up comedy special Adam Sandler 100% Fresh.
