The 829th episode and the Season 42 Finale of Saturday Night Live premiered on May 20, 2017, hosted by actor and former professional WWE wrestler Dwayne Johnson, with musical guest Katy Perry, a singer-songwriter, who performed "Swish Swish" and "Bon Appétit" with Migos and appeared in the pre-recorded "Rap Song" sketch. This is Dwayne Johnson's 5th time as the host, thus making him a five-time host to enter The Five-Timers Club. This is also the 3rd time as musical guest on SNL for Katy Perry.

Johnson was introduced into the Five-Timers Club in the monologue. Alec Baldwin and Tom Hanks appeared, where he announced a fake presidential campaign with him and Hanks, who would run as President and Vice-President, respectfully.

Johnson previously hosted SNL 4 times on the following dates: On March 18, 2000, the fifteenth episode of SNL's 25th Season, with musical guests AC/DC, an Australian rock band, April 13, 2002, the seventeenth episode of SNL's 27th Season, with musical guest Andrew W.K., March 7, 2009, the seventeenth episode of SNL's 34th Season, with musical guest Ray LaMontagne and March 28, 2015, the sixteenth episode of SNL's 40th Season, with musical guest George Ezra, an English singer-songwriter and musician.

Katy Perry previously performed on SNL on the following dates: On September 25, 2010, the Season 36 premiere, hosted by longtime former cast member and Weekend Update anchor Amy Poehler, which coincidentally, was the first episode for now-departing cast member Vanessa Bayer, on December 10, 2011, the ninth episode and Holidays show of SNL's 37th Season, with herself as host only, with musical guest Robyn and October 12, 2013, the third episode of SNL's 39th Season, hosted by actor Bruce Willis.

This marked the final episode for longtime cast members: Bobby Moynihan (a cast member since 2008), as he left the show after nine years, Vanessa Bayer (a cast member since 2010), as she left the show after seven years, and Sasheer Zamata (who joined the cast back in 2014), as she left the show afte4 4½ years.

He also thanked the cast and crew of SNL and Lorne Michaels, and the audience members. The female cast members, but Melissa Villaseñor are crying because of the leave of the departing longtime cast members Vanessa, Bobby and Sasheer and saying their goodbyes. On all versions, the quiet applause and cheering from the studio are used. After the band plays another note, the shot were the camera scrolls up to the clock appears. And then, the I love ny, copyright notice and logos appear.

• This was also the final episode for longtime staff writers and head writers Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider (who had overall been writers for the show since 2011, and became head writers at the start of this season), as they left the show after six years of overall writing there together, and one season as head writer.
• This is the 2nd and last appearance of Dawn Lazarus.
• This is the 13th and final appearance of Drunk Uncle, which it's a sendoff for Bobby Moynihan, as he left the show after nine years.
