The finale of Season 14, as well as the 266th episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Steve Martin with musical guest Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. This was Steve Martin’s 11th time as host, as well as the 3rd musical stint on SNL for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

The episode aired on the same day as the death of original cast member Gilda Radner, who died from ovarian cancer. In place of his originally planned monologue, Martin discusses his interactions with the people of SNL. As he struggles to hold back tears, he introduces a replay of season 3's "Dancing in the Dark" sketch featuring him and Radner. Afterwards he ends the monologue by talking about "how great she was and of how young I looked. Gilda, we miss you."

Trivia[]

    • Starting with next season, Dave Wilson (the show's original director from 1975-1986) returned to direct the show, and would do so until his retirement in 1995.
