The 850th episode and the Season 43 Finale of Saturday Night Live premiered on May 19, 2018, hosted by longtime former cast member Tina Fey with musical guest Nicki Minaj, a rapper, singer and songwriter. This is Tina Fey's 6th hosting stint and Nicki Minaj made her 3rd musical guest appearance on SNL.
The last time Nicki Minaj was the musical guest was on the December 6, 2014 episode, the eighth episode of Season 40, hosted by the actor James Franco.
This is the last episode for first-year feature player Luke Null, as he would let go after just one season.

- A photograph of Margot Kidder, who had died six days earlier, is shown before the goodnights.
- On the new episode, On demand, TV app and NBC app versions, the cheers and applause track from the montage is used. On Hulu and Sling versions, the cheers and applause track from the studio is used. After Darrell Hammond's credit, the I Love New York trademark and copyright notice appears and takes a couple seconds to were the camera scrolls up to the clock. Then the logos appear. On the new episode version, when there credits coming from all over the place, it cuts to commercial.
- This was the final episode for longtime SNL writer/segment dorector Dave McCary (who had been written the show since 2013), who left the show after five years.
- This was also Bryan Tucker's final episode as head writer (Tucker had been in the role since 2014, as after about 4½ years as head writer, he was named a 'Senior Writer' the very next season.
