The 968th episode and the Season 49 Finale of Saturday Night Live premiered on May 18, 2024, hosted by actor Jake Gyllenhaal, star of the Amazon Prime movie Road House, who also played the character Quentin Beck / Mysterio in the 2019 film Spider-Man: Far From Home, as well as the hit films Brokeback Mountain, Zodiac, Life, Brothers, Prisoners, Enemy, Love & Other Drugs, Nightcrawler, Source Code, Nocturnal Animals, Wildlife, Velvet Buzzsaw, The Guilty and Ambulance, and Disney's hit animated film Strange World, with musical guest Sabrina Carpenter. The musical guest debut for Sabrina Carpenter was made, and this was the 3rd time as host on SNL for Jake Gyllenhaal.
Jake Gyllenhaal previously hosted SNL on the following dates: On January 13, 2007, the 10th episode and first show of 2007 of SNL's 32nd season, with musical guests The Shins, and on April 9, 2022, the 17th episode of SNL's 47th season, (which he returned to host for the 2nd time and his first appearance in 15 years, 2 months, and 27 days), with musical guest Camila Cabello.
This is the final episode for cast members Punkie Johnson (who previously joined the cast in 2020), Molly Kearney (who previously joined the cast in 2022), and Chloe Troast (who previously joined the cast at the start of the season), as they each announced their respective departures over the summer offseason. Johnson lasted just four years as a cast member, Kearney lasted for two, and Troast lasted for only one.
The goodnights speech for Jake Gyllenhaal is "Thank You to the Incredible Sabrina Carpenter, the Uncomfortable Jon Hamm, Thank You to Lorne Michaels and the Entire Cast and Crew of Saturday Night Live, It's Always an Honor. - Before the goodnights, a still photo of actor Dabney Coleman, who hosted SNL on October 31, 1987, the third episode and Halloween show of Season 13, with musical guest The Cars, who died two days earlier, was shown in silence.
- This was also the final episode for writers Alex English and Vannessa Jackson (who both joined the writing staff back in 2021), as they were both let go from the show, after just three years.
- This was also the last one for longtime writer Gary Richardson (who had written for the show since 2017; with the exception for the 2021-22 season), as he was also let go from the show, after six accumulative years.
- Richardson had also been one of the show's writing supervisors for the past 1½ year, being promoted in the middle of the previous season.
