The season finale of Season 40 and the 787th episode of Saturday Night Live premiered on May 16, 2015, and it was hosted by stand-up comedian, actor and filmmaker Louis C.K., star of FX's comedy drama series Louie, his documentary/stand-up comedy special Louis C.K. 2017 and the hit animated film The Secret Life of Pets, with musical guest Rihanna, who performed "Bitch Better Have My Money" and "American Oxygen". This is Louis C.K.'s 3rd time as host, as well as the 5th musical guest appearance on SNL for Rihanna, thus making Rihanna a former five-time musical guest.
The goodnights speech for Louis CK is "How about Rihanna everybody, (Cheers and applause), I Want to Thank Lorne I Want to Thank this Whole Crew, This Cast What a Great Cast They All Did Such a Great Job, and also from Two Floors Up Before David Letterman Started on Television, I Want to Say Goodbye to Him and Thank Him for Everything and Thank You for Being a Great Crowd Have a Great Summer". - The same thing as last episode when Lorne Michaels’ credit scrolls up when the theme starts. On demand, TV app and NBC app versions, the cheers and applause track from the montage is used. Hulu and Sling use the quiet clapping track, and the cheering comes from the studio. On sling versions, after Nick Poyner’s credit, the I love ny, copyright notice and logos appear.
- Everyone else’s credits are the same when the band is on their next note, the camera scrolls up to the clock and the I love ny, copyright notice and logos appear. During SNL Studios, the cheering from the audience in the studio can be heard before it fades out.
- The cheering from the audience is very loud in this episode.
- Louis C.K. is also the third person to host SNL in consecutive seasons, after Emma Stone and Melissa McCarthy.
- This marked the final episode for longtime writer Mike O'Brien, who had been in the writing staff in 2009. Claire Mulaney, who joined the writing staff in 2013, also departed as well.
- This was also the last episode for writers Natasha Rothwell, Nick Rutherford and Alison Rich.
- This was also Colin Jost's final episode as head writer until 2017, during the show's 43rd season, as well would resign from the head writer position after three years. However, Jost (who, as a writer for the show since 2005, had been with the show for 10 years at this point), returned to SNL the next season as a regular writer while still doing Weekend Update.
