The 828th episode and 20th episode of Saturday Night Live's 42nd season premiered on May 13, 2017, hosted by actress Melissa McCarthy, star of the hit films Bridesmaids, Identity Thief, The Heat, Tammy, St. Vincent, Spy, The Boss, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Life of the Party, The Happytime Murders, The Kitchen, Superintelligence, Thunder Force, The Starling and Genie and Disney's hit musical fantasy film The Little Mermaid, with pop rock band HAIM as the musical guests, who performed "Want You Back" and "Little of Your Love" and appeared in the opening monologue and in the pre-recorded "Kyle and Leslie". Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin welcomed McCarthy to the Five-Timers Club during the goodnights. This is Melissa McCarthy's 5th time as the host, thus making her a five-time host to enter The Five-Timers Club. This is also HAIM's 2nd musical guest appearance on SNL.

McCarthy previously hosted SNL 4 times on the following dates: On October 1, 2011, the second episode of SNL's 37th season, with musical guests Lady Antebellum, on April 6, 2013, the seventeenth episode of SNL's 38th season, with musical guests Phoenix, a French indie rock band, on February 1, 2014, the thirteenth episode of SNL's 39th season, with musical guests Imagine Dragons, a pop rock band; which coincidentally, was the final episode for now-departing longtime cast member, head writer and Weekend Update anchor Seth Meyers, and February 13, 2016, the thirteenth episode of SNL's 41st season, with musical guest Kanye West.

HAIM previously made their musical guest debut was on November 23, 2013, the seventh episode and the Thanksgiving show of SNL's 39th season, hosted by actor Josh Hutcherson, star of The Hunger Games film series, as well as the hit films The Forger Escobar: Paradise Lost, and Five Nights at Freddy's and the animated film Epic.

The game show was based upon 1980s game show "Press Your Luck," albeit with spaces added to the board to account for widescreen television. It included PYL's background music and "Whammy" sound effect, frequently landing on the top-row space third from the right (the big money space on PYL), and the ability to pass. In making the game board move on live television, it was noticeably inaccurate, frequently jumping away from the space where it had actually been stopped.

With guests, Pete Davidson talks about getting sober and Che's neighbor Cathy Anne (Cecily Strong) gives her opinions on James Comey's dismissal.
Film Panel of Lincoln Center In a film panel discussion hosted by Jen Freeman (Vanessa Bayer), legendary actress Debette Gouldry (Kate McKinnon) and Gaye Fontaine (Melissa McCarthy) had a more sexist experience in Hollywood than Marion Cotillard (Cecily Strong) and Lupita Nyong'o (Sasheer Zamata).
Kyle And Leslie Kyle Mooney gets insecure of the fact that Leslie Jones has been spending more time at work with Colin Jost.
