The 16th episode of Season 22 and the 422nd episode of Saturday Night Live premiered on March 22, 1997. It was hosted by longtime former cast member Mike Myers, star of the hit 1997 spy comedy film Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and DreamWorks Animation's Shrek franchise, with the legendary rock band Aerosmith as the musical guests. This was Mike Myers' first-time hosting, and Aerosmith's 3rd musical guest appearance on SNL.

Aerosmith previously made their 2nd musical guest appearance on SNL on the following dates: On February 17, 1990, the thirteenth episode of SNL's 15th season, hosted by actor Tom Hanks, and on October 9, 1993, the third episode of SNL's 19th season, hosted by actor Jeff Goldblum, star of the hit 1993 action adventure film Jurassic Park.

The goodnights speech for Mike Myers is "Thank you very much, Thank you to Aerosmith, Thank you to the cast, Thank you, Robin, I love you, Robin - you wrote great sketches! Thank you, Robin, Happy Birthday, Davey Mack, I love you, Thank you, everybody, Thank you very much". (Cheers and Applause)
