The 15th episode of Season 9 and the 174th episode of Saturday Night Live premiered on March 17, 1984, hosted by actor and comedian Billy Crystal, star of the ABC sitcom Soap with musical guest Al Jarreau, a singer and musician. This was the first time that Billy Crystal hosted and his 2nd appearance, and this is also Al Jarreau's 2nd musical guest appearance on SNL, as well as his only appearance in the Ebersol-era.
