The sixteenth episode of Season 23 and the 442nd episode of Saturday Night Live premiered on March 14, 1998, hosted by actress Julianne Moore, star of the hit films Short Cuts, Todd Haynes' Safe, Nine Months, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Boogie Nights, The End of the Affair, Far from Heaven, The Hours, The Big Lebowski, Magnolia, Hannibal, Children of Men, A Single Man, The Kids Are All Right, Crazy, Stupid, Love, Maps to the Stars, the HBO film Game Change, Still Alice, The Hunger Games film series (2014–2015) and the spy film Kingsman: The Golden Circle and Haynes' drama May December, with musical guest Backstreet Boys, a vocal group. Backstreet Boys' musical guest debut on SNL was made, and this was Julianne Moore's only time hosting.
This marked the final credited episode for longtime cast member Norm Macdonald (a cast member since 1993), as he left the show after five years.
