John Edmund Mulaney (born August 26, 1982) is an American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and producer. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Mulaney first rose to prominence for his work as a writer for the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 2008 to 2013, where he contributed to numerous sketches and characters, including Stefon, a recurring character whom he and Bill Hader co-created. Since his departure from SNL, Mulaney has hosted it six times, becoming a member of the SNL Five-Timers Club in 2022.
Mulaney's stand-up specials include The Top Part (2009), New in Town (2012), The Comeback Kid (2015), Kid Gorgeous (2018), and Baby J (2023). He won three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for Kid Gorgeous, Baby J, and SNL 50. Mulaney released a children's musical comedy special on Netflix, John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch (2019).
He was the creator and star of the semi-autobiographical Fox sitcom Mulaney, which aired for one season (2014–2015). Mulaney has also performed as George St. Geegland in a comedic duo with Nick Kroll, and they appeared on television and on Broadway in the show Oh, Hello on Broadway (2016–2017). Mulaney serves as a co-executive producer, writer, and occasional actor in the IFC mockumentary series Documentary Now! (2015–2022). He hosted, created, and executive produced the Netflix talk show Everybody's in LA (2024) and its spinoff Everybody's Live with John Mulaney (2025).
Mulaney has taken guest roles in the Apple TV+ period series Dickinson (2019), the FX dramedy series The Bear (2023–), and the Peacock crime series Poker Face (2025). He also voiced Andrew Glouberman in the Netflix animated show Big Mouth (2017–2025), Peter Porker / Spider-Ham in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), Chip in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022), and Big Jack Horner in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022).
He had a grey French bulldog named Petunia.
On July 5, 2014, Mulaney married multimedia artist Annamarie Tendler. Friend Dan Levy performed their wedding ceremony. Their separation was announced in May 2021, and they divorced in January 2022.
In September 2021, Mulaney announced that he and his girlfriend, actress Olivia Munn, were expecting a child. On November 24, 2021, their first child, a son, was born. Mulaney and Munn married in July 2024 in New York. Their second child, a daughter, was born via surrogate on September 14, 2024. They live in Orange County, California.

He created Mulaney, the short-lived Fox show in 2014, and then in 2015, he helped co-write multiple Documentary Now! episodes.
In 2017, he became a consulting producer on the Netflix show Big Mouth, as well as voicing several characters.
SNL Career[]
In 2008, he auditioned alongside Nick Kroll and T.J. Miller, and was hired for a spot on the writing team, where he worked from 2008-2012.
Together with Bill Hader, the two of them created the Weekend Update character Stefon, a gay club reviewer, who went on to marry Seth Meyers, and then have several children.
In 2011, Mulaney won an Emmy for co-writing Justin Timberlake's monologue, and at the 2018 Emmy's has been nominated for SNL, and for his comedy special, Kid Gorgeous.
Mulaney returned to Saturday Night Live to host for the first time, as well as his hosting debut on April 14, 2018, the eighteenth episode of Season 43, with musical guest Jack White.
Mulaney returned to host Saturday Night Live for the 2nd time on March 2, 2019, the fourteenth episode of Season 44, with musical guest Thomas Rhett, a country singer-songwriter.
Mulaney returned to host Saturday Night Live again for the 3rd time on February 29, 2020, the fourteenth episode of Season 45, with musical guest David Byrne, making him the most frequent former SNL writer who was never hired as a cast member to host the show more than two, beating out Larry David. It also marked the first SNL episode to premiered on Leap Day.
Mulaney returned to host Saturday Night Live again for the 4th time, making him the most frequent former SNL writer to host the show, beating out Larry David twice, on October 31, 2020, the fifth episode and the Halloween-themed show of Season 46, with musical guests The Strokes, the legendary rock band; making this the first episode to have premiered on Halloween since 1992.
Mulaney returned to host Saturday Night Live once again for the 5th time on February 26, 2022, the thirteenth episode of Season 47, making him a five-time host and the frequent former SNL writer to enter the Five-Timers Club, beating out Larry David thrice, with musical guests LCD Soundsystem.
Mulaney returned to hosting Saturday Night Live once again for the 6th time (the first time in 2 years), making him the most former frequent SNL writer who was never hired as a cast member to host the show more than five as the frequent SNL host on November 2, 2024, the fifth episode and last pre-U.S. Presidential Election episode of Season 50, with musical Chappell Roan.
