(1977-1981) and was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, the only U.S. President to have recieved the Prize after leaving office, as well as receiving the award for extensive peacekeeping efforts, rather than "just being president". Before he became President, Carter, a Democrat, served as a U.S. Naval officer, was a peanut farmer, served two terms as a Georgia State Senator and one as a Governor of Georgia (1971-1975).
On Saturday Night Live, he has mostly been impersonated by Dan Akyroyd.
He was known for being the President during the Iran Hostage Crisis. That, along with an economic recession, would cause him to lose re-election in a landslide to Ronald Reagan.
He passed away at the age of 100, the longest-lived former president ever. He had outlived his successor, his predecessor, George H. W. Bush, his Vice President, Prince Philip, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Queen Elizabeth II.
