The 841st episode and 12th episode of Saturday Night Live's 43rd season premiered on January 27, 2018, hosted by longtime former cast member Will Ferrell, star of the hit films, A Night at the Roxbury, Superstar, Old School, Elf, Anchorman, Blades of Glory, Zoolander and the sequel Zoolander 2, Melinda and Melinda, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Semi-Pro, Step Brothers, Land of the Lost, The Other Guys, Bewitched, The Campaign, Downhill, Stranger Than Fiction, Kicking & Screaming, Casa de mi padre, Get Hard, Everything Must Go, Holmes & Watson, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, Downhill, Daddy's Home and the sequel Daddy's Home 2, Spirited, Strays, Quiz Lady, and You're Cordially Invited and the animated films Curious George, Megamind, The Lego Movie film franchise and Despicable Me 4, with country singer-songwriter and guitarist Chris Stapleton as the musical guest, who performed "Midnight Train to Memphis" and "Hard Livin", both with Sturgill Simpson. This is the 4th hosting stint for Will Ferrell and Chris Stapleton made his 2nd musical guest appearance on SNL.
Chris Stapleton previously made his musical guest debut on January 16, 2016, the tenth episode and first show of New Year 2016 of SNL's 41st season, hosted by actor Adam Driver.

- This was likely the final episode for longtime lightning designer Phil Hymes, as he retired in the middle of the show's mid-season, after nearly 42 years. Several years later, Hymes passed away on July 29, 2019, at the age of 96 in Manhattan Hospital, due to complications from bladder cancer.
