The 736th episode and 12th episode of Saturday Night Live's38th season premiered on January 26, 2013. It was hosted by Adam Levine, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the pop rock band Maroon 5 and the star and coach of the NBC's longest-running singing reality competition series The Voice, with rapper Kendrick Lamar as the musical guest, who performed "Swimming Pools (Drank)" and "Poetic Justice" and appeared in the SNL Digital Short: YOLO. This was Adam Levine's first-time hosting, as well as his 7th appearance. This is also Kendrick Lamar's musical guest debut on SNL.

Adam Levine's Maroon 5 bandmate, Mickey Madden, appeared in the "Rumble" sketch.
This was Adam Levine's second main appearance in Season 38. Levine, along with Maroon 5, previously appeared as the musical guest on November 17, 2012.
This was the last time that Jason Sudeikis played Joe Biden, both while Sudeikis was still part of the cast, and while Biden was vice-president.
However, Sudeikis would reprise the role a few more times, after the real Biden started running for president.
