The 55th episode and ninth episode of Season 3 of Saturday Night Live premiered on January 21, 1978, hosted by the comic actor Steve Martin with musical guests Randy Newman and The Dirt Band. This is Steve Martin's 4th time hosting and Randy Newman made his 2nd musical guest appearance on SNL, as well as the only musical guest appearance on SNL for the Dirt Band.
