The 10th episode of Season 5 and the 96th episode of Saturday Night Live premiered on February 9, 1980, hosted by original (and former) cast member Chevy Chase, star of Caddyshack and the sequel 1988 film Caddyshack II, five of the National Lampoon's Vacation films, and the hit films Foul Play, Seems Like Old Times, Under the Rainbow, Modern Problems, Deal of the Century, Three Amigos!, Disney's comedy film Man of the House, Spies Like Us, Fletch and the sequel Fletch Lives, Funny Money, Zoom, Nothing but Trouble, Cops and Robbersons, The Last Laugh, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Funny Farm, Dirty Work, Snow Day, and The Magic Roundabout, with musical guests Marianne Faithfull and Tom Scott. This is Chevy Chase's 2nd hosting stint.

This is also Marianne Faithful and Tom Scott's first-time and only respective musical guest stints, as well as Scott's 3rd appearance on SNL.

The episode introduced the "diner" intro that would remain for the remainder of the season, featuring new portraits of the cast members. It was also the first episode in which Harry Shearer was a member of the repertory cast, marking the first time a featured player was promoted.

"I’d like to thank the goat. I’d like to thank Marianne Faithfull. I’d like to thank Tom Scott. I’d like to thank all my great friends here. It was a great night, thank you!" is the goodnights speech for Chevy Chase.
