The eleventh episode of Season 3 and the 57th episode of Saturday Night Live premiered on February 18, 1978, and it was hosted by original (and former) cast member Chevy Chase with musical guest Billy Joel. It marked the first time a former cast member hosted the show. Billy Joel made his musical guest debut on SNL, and this was Chevy Chase's first time as host.

Broken Sketch | In a fourth-wall breaking sketch, Chevy Chase breaks into a tea party with Laraine Newman, Gilda Radner, and Jane Curtin, who are forced to break character by Chase's antics. They are then outroed by Rod Serling (Dan Aykroyd), who is in turn outroed by John Belushi as Truman Capote, until being stopped by the director (Bill Murray). The women reenter and start to introduce "A Film By Garret Morris," before everyone attempts to end the sketch with a heart attack. They then segue into a Land Shark sketch, before Garrett enters dressed as the pope, wondering about his film. | |
Goodbyes | Chevy Chase plays organ with SNL band. Bill Murray makes a late entrance while looking miserable and he briefly shoots a particularly unhappy look towards Chevy hamming it up at the piano. Dan and John then stand by Bill. |
