The 822nd episode and 14th episode of Saturday Night Live's 42nd season premiered on February 11, 2017. It was hosted by actor and comedian Alec Baldwin, star of the hit films, Alice, To Rome with Love, Blue Jasmine, The Aviator, Concussion, The Departed, Ghosts of Mississippi, Mercury Rising, and Thomas and the Magic Railroad and the DreamWorks Animation films Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Rise of the Guardians, and The Boss Baby, with the musical guest being Ed Sheeran, an English guitarist and singer. This is Alec Baldwin's 17th time hosting, thus making him the most frequent host on the show. This is also the 2nd musical guest appearance on SNL for Ed Sheeran.

The last time Alec Baldwin hosted the season premiere of Saturday Night Live's 37th season on September 24, 2011, with the musical guest being Radiohead.

Ed Sheeran was previously the musical guest on SNL on April 12, 2014, the 18th episode of SNL’s 39th Season hosted by Seth Rogen.
