The 758th episode and 13th episode of Saturday Night Live's 39th season premiered on February 1, 2014, hosted by actress and comedian Melissa McCarthy, star of the CBS' hit sitcom Mike & Molly and the hit films Bridesmaids, Identity Thief, The Heat, Tammy, St. Vincent, Spy, The Boss, Life of the Party, The Happytime Murders, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, The Kitchen, Superintelligence, Thunder Force, and Genie, and Disney's live-action musical romantic fantasy film The Little Mermaid, with pop rock band Imagine Dragons as the musical guests, who performed "Radioactive" with Kendrick Lamar and "Demons". This is Melissa McCarthy's 3rd time hosting, and the musical guest debut on SNL for the Imagine Dragons.

This marked the final episode for longtime cast member, head writer, and Weekend Update anchor Seth Meyers (a cast member since 2001, head writer since 2006 and "Weekend Update" anchor since 2006). He departed from the show mid-season following this episode, after being on the show for 13 seasons, and head writing and hosting Update for 8 seasons, to host NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Kendrick Lamar cameo to performed "Demons" with Imagine Dragons for their first performance. SNL alums Amy Poehler, Bill Hader (in character as Stefon), Andy Samberg, and Fred Armisen (reprising his David Paterson impersonation) all made cameos in this episode during Weekend Update for Seth's final show.

Melissa McCarthy previously hosted SNL on the following dates: On October 1, 2011, the second episode of SNL's 37th season, with musical guests Lady Antebellum, and on April 6, 2013, the seventeenth episode of SNL's 38th season, with musical guests Phoenix.

Melissa McCarthy's goodnight speech is "Thank you to Imagine Dragons, Kendrick Lamar, Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Fred Armisen, the Cast and the Crew and the Shop That Made Everything! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, New York". (Cheers and applause)

Trivia[]

  • A still of Pete Seeger, who had died five days earlier, was shown in complete silence following Weekend Update.
  • Melissa McCarthy also becomes a third-time SNL host.

Notes/Trivia[]

  • In what was likely a slip, during "Summer of Diane," McCarthy tells Moynihan to "watch my shit," language that goes beyond typical SNL fare. The closed captions read "watch my stuff."
  • Bastille and Imagine Dragons are the 3rd instance where SNL had consecutive bands/musical groups headline as the Musical Guests.
