The eighth episode of Season 16 and the 294th episode overall of Saturday Night Live premiered on December 8, 1990, hosted by actor Tom Hanks with musical guest Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians. Steve Martin, Elliott Gould and Paul Simon welcome Hanks to the Five-Timers Club. This is Tom Hanks’ 5th time as host, thus making him a five-time host to enter the Five-Timers Club, and the very first time that the Five-Timers Club was acknowledged. This is also Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians' 2nd musical guest appearance on SNL.
This episode also included Adam Sandler's first onscreen appearance on Saturday Night Live. A writer at the time, Sandler made his uncredited debut in the "Sabra Shopping Network" sketch (he would officially join the cast as a featured player a few months later).
