The 978th episode and 10th episode of Saturday Night Live's 50th season premieres on December 21, 2024, hosted by former short-term Ebersol-era (and former SCTV) cast member Martin Short, the co-star of Hulu's hit mystery comedy-drama series Only Murders in the Building alongside with Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, and star of the hit films Three Amigos, Innerspace, Three Fugitives, Captain Ron, Clifford, Mars Attacks!, Jungle 2 Jungle, A Simple Wish, Mumford, and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, and he also provided voice-work for the hit animated films such as The Pebble and the Penguin, DreamWorks Animation's classic film The Prince of Egypt, Disney's hit animated films Treasure Planet, 101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure and Frankenweenie, Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper, Nickelodeon Movies Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and The Spiderwick Chronicles, The Wind Rises and The Willoughbys, with musical guest Hozier, an Irish musician, singer and songwriter. For the Christmas show of the 50th season, Short returned to Saturday Night Live to hosted for the 5th time and he becomes the sixth former cast member to enter the Five-Timers Club, after Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig. This is Martin Short's 5th time as host, thus making Short a five-time host and the sixth former cast member to enter The Five-Timers Club. This is also the 2nd appearance as the musical guest on SNL for Hozier.

Short previously hosted SNL 4 times, 2 solo & 2 with Steve Martin on the following dates: On December 6, 1986, the sixth episode of SNL's 12th season, alongside with co-hosts Chevy Chase and Steve Martin, thus making Chevy the former five-time host and the first original (and former) cast member to enter the Five-Timers Club, with musical guest Randy Newman, thus making him a former five-time musical guest, on December 7, 1996, the eighth episode of SNL's 22nd season, with musical guests No Doubt, on December 15, 2012, the tenth episode and Christmas show of SNL's 38th season, with musical guest Paul McCartney and on December 10, 2022, the eighth and Holidays episode of SNL's 48th season, which he co-hosted with Steve Martin for the second time, with musical guest Brandi Carlile.

Hozier previously made his musical guest debut on October 11, 2014, the third episode of SNL's 40th season, hosted by longtime former cast member Bill Hader.

Former Ebersol-era cast member Martin Short returned to SNL to host for the fifth time and he discusses about his accomplishments and joining the Five-Timers Club before spreading some holiday cheer with a Christmas carol. Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the week's biggest news, like George Santos annoucing his podcast, Luigi Mangione ending up in the same prison as Diddy, a study finding that the moon might be 100 million years older than previous tonight and a Pizza Shop refusing to cater to same-sex couples and they also make each other read jokes they've never seen before live on air to close out the year 2024. With guest, A drone (Bowen Yang) talks about New Jersey drones; and Scarlett Johansson watches as her husband, Colin Jost tells jokes about her.
Sábado Gigante Christmas Special
A man (Paul Rudd) who doesn't speak Spanish competes on a Spanish game show hosted by Chilean TV star Don Francisco (Marcello Hernandez). Also features Chloe Fineman as Maria, Emil Wakim as Dracula, Bowen Yang as El Chacal, and Ashley Padilla as Stefania. Cameo by longtime former cast member Dana Carvey.
