The 898th episode and 9th episode of Saturday Night Live's 46th season premiered on December 19, 2020, hosted by longtime former cast member Kristen Wiig, star of the hit films Bridesmaids, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Skeleton Twins, The Martian, Ghostbusters, Downsizing, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Mother!, and Wonder Woman 1984, and the animated films Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Sausage Party, DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon franchise and Despicable Me franchise, with pop sensation Dua Lipa as the musical guest. This is Kristen Wiig's 4th hosting stint and Dua Lipa made her 2nd musical guest appearance on SNL.
Dua Lipa previously made her musical guest debut was on February 3, 2018, the thirteenth episode of SNL's 43rd season, hosted by Israeli-American actress Natalie Portman.
Lipa was supposed to perform on the show on the March 28, 2020 episode, the sixteenth episode of the previous season, hosted by actor John Krasinski, but her appearance was scrapped after COVID-19 emerged.

- Longtime former cast member Kristen Wiig hosted the Christmas show, just 7 months and 10 days after she hosted the Season 45 finale on May 9, 2020, with musical guests Boyz II Men. She is the seventh longtime former cast member to host the Christmas show, after Bill Murray (Season 7), Eddie Murphy (Seasons 8, 10, and 45), Jimmy Fallon (Seasons 37 and 39), Martin Short (Seasons 38 and Season 50) and Tina Fey & Amy Poehler (Season 41).
- Wiig is also the third longtime former female cast member to host a Christmas show, after Fey and Poehler.
