The 918th episode and 9th episode of Saturday Night Live's 47th season premiered on December 18, 2021, hosted by actor Paul Rudd, star of the hit films This is 40, I Love You, Man, Admission, Prince Avalance, They Came Together, All is Bright, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Wanderlust, The Little Prince, The Fundamentals of Caring, The Catcher Was a Spy, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero films, Antman, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Endgame and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Rudd hosted SNL for the fifth time, and he became the newest member of the Five-Timers Club. This is Paul Rudd's 5th time as the host, thus making him a five-time host to enter the Five-Timers Club on SNL.
Rudd previously hosted SNL 4 times on: November 15, 2008, the eighth episode of SNL's 34th season, with musical guest Beyoncé Knowles, December 11, 2010, the ninth episode and the Holidays episode of SNL's 36th season, with musical guest Paul McCartney, the former Beatle and English music legend, December 7, 2013, the eighth episode of SNL's 39th season, with musical guest One Direction, an English-Irish pop boy band and May 18, 2019, which is the Season 44 finale, with musical guest DJ Khaled, with special guests Lil Wayne, Big Sean, Jeremih, Meek Mill, J. Balvin, SZA and John Legend.
Originally, it was announced that Charli XCX would return for her second musical guest appearance. She was due to perform "Good Ones" and "New Shapes" on this episode. However, due to COVID-19 protocols, on the day of the show, it was announced that she would not be appearing, and there would be no live audience in attendance.[1] Her performance was rescheduled on March 5, 2022, the fourteenth episode, hosted by actor Oscar Isaac. It was also announced that the cast and crew would be limited; specifically, Colin Jost, Aristotle Athari, and Sarah Sherman had reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 and could not perform.[2] At the beginning of the episode, it was announced that none of the cast were in attendance, with the exception of Kenan Thompson, who together with Tom Hanks and Tina Fey presented Paul Rudd with his Five-Timers jackets and introduced sketches. The only other cast member who appeared was Michael Che, who anchored Weekend Update with Fey.
The episode was a mixture of pretaped sketches intended to be a part of the planned episode, along with repeats of older sketches. Those present in the studio simply introduced sketches from Home Base.

He know it wasn't the Christmas show that they expected, but the that's the beauty of the place, like life, it's unpredictable and lives like a big weird chocolate bar, sometimes it's delicious, other times it got that orange cream filling in it and it's like not what he chosen, but it's better nothing. He loved that movie and SNL, and thanked everyone, reminds them to stay safe and wishes to have a very "Happy Holiday". |
