The 594th episode and 9th episode of Saturday Night Live's 31st season premiered on December 17, 2005, hosted by comedian and actor Jack Black and the musical guest was Neil Young, a Canadian and American singer, songwriter and musician, who performed "It's A Dream" and "He Was the King", and also appeared in the Appalachian Emergency Room sketch as the druggie son. This is Jack Black's 3rd time hosting and Neil Young's 4th musical guest appearance on SNL.
Neil Young previously made his 3rd musical guest appearances on SNL on the following dates: On September 30, 1989, the Season 15 premiere, hosted by actor Bruce Willis, December 5, 1992, hosted by comedian and actor Tom Arnold, and May 6, 2000, the eighteenth episode of Season 25, hosted by actor John Goodman.

- Maya Rudolph and Horatio Sanz do not appear in this episode, Rudolph is absent because she was on maternity leave while Sanz was likely shut out of the live show, they both are still credited however.
- Johnny Knoxville, Darlene Love and Black's Tenacious D partner Kyle Gass all make cameo appearances in this episode. Knoxville appears during the Appalachian Emergency Room sketch, Love lends her vocals to the Saturday TV Funhouse cartoon Christmastime for the Jews and also performs "White Christmas" with the Saturday Night Live Band and Gass appeared during the spelling bee sketch.
