The 594th episode and 9th episode of Saturday Night Live's 31st season premiered on December 17, 2005, hosted by comedian and actor Jack Black, with musical guest Neil Young, a Canadian and American singer, songwriter and musician, who performed "It's A Dream" and "He Was the King", and also appeared in the Appalachian Emergency Room sketch as the druggie son. This is Jack Black's 3rd time hosting and Neil Young's 4th musical guest appearance on SNL.

Neil Young previously made his 3rd musical guest appearances on SNL on the following dates: On September 30, 1989, which the Season 15 premiere, hosted by actor Bruce Willis, on December 5, 1992, the eighth episode of SNL's 18th season, hosted by comedian and actor Tom Arnold, and on May 6, 2000, the eighteenth episode of SNL's 25th season, hosted by actor John Goodman.

Jack Black's goodnight speech is "Hey Thanks to Neil Young, Johnny Knoxville, Tracy Morgan and My Main Man, Kyle Gass, My Parents, All Four of You Guys, I Love All, Happy Hanukkah and a Merry Christmas". (Cheers and applause)
