The 754th episode and 9th episode of Season 39 of Saturday Night Live premiered on December 14, 2013, hosted by actor John Goodman, making his first appearance in 12 years. Kings of Leon, a legendary rock band, who performed "Temple" and "Wait for Me", are the musical guests and appeared in the pre-recorded "Guy Fieri's Full Throttle Holiday Special" sketch.

This is the 3rd musical guest stint on SNL for the Kings of Leon and the 13th time as the host on SNL for John Goodman.

Goodman last hosted SNL on November 3, 2001, the fourth episode of SNL's 27th season, with rapper Ja Rule as the musical guest.

The Kings of Leon previously made their 2nd musical guest stints on SNL on the following dates: On September 20, 2008, the second episode of SNL's 34th season, hosted by actor James Franco, and on October 23, 2010, the fourth episode of SNL's 36th season, hosted by actress Emma Stone.

The Christmas Whistle		In this TCM classic movie, a man (John Goodman) gets fired, then learns the true meaning of Christmas: a whistle that shows someone is watching over you. The whistling disturbs his family (Kate McKinnon, Nasim Pedrad, Aidy Bryant, and Kyle Mooney) and neighbors (Bobby Moynihan) until he acts heroically, and Bartholomew (Taran Killam) comes in when he's choking.
H&M		A man (John Goodman) has $60 to buy six shirts and four pairs of pants, so he goes to H&M and leaves looking like a member of One Direction, in this musical short featuring Jay Pharoah, Wale and Taran Killam. With Nasim Pedrad, John Milhiser, Kate McKinnon, Kyle Mooney, Noël Wells, and Mike O'Brien.
Last Call with John Goodman		A bartender (Kenan Thompson) must endure the romance developing between the last two people in a bar, Sheila Sovage (Kate McKinnon) and Vernon Crotcher (John Goodman). Sheila ends up eating whip cream off of Vernon's beard
Goodnights and Closing Credits		John Goodman thanked the Kings of Leon, Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, and everybody for having him back.
