The 917th episode and 8th episode of Saturday Night Live's 47th season premiered on December 11, 2021. Singer and songwriter Billie Eilish was the host and also served as the musical guest. Billie Eilish previously made her musical guest debut on September 28, 2019, the Season 45 premiere, hosted by actor Woody Harrelson, which coincidentally, was the first episode for current cast members Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang. This is Billie Eilish's first-time hosting, and she also made her 2nd musical guest appearance on SNL.
This episode marked the return of Kate McKinnon, after she was absent for the first seven episodes of the season, due to filming Peacock's drama streaming limited series Joe vs. Carole.
