The 9th episode of Season 8 and the 148th episode of Saturday Night Live premiered on December 11, 1982, hosted by Ebersol-era cast member Eddie Murphy with musical guest Lionel Richie. Murphy substituted for his 48 Hours co-star Nick Nolte after Nolte fell ill and announced show as "Live from New York, it's the Eddie Murphy Show!". This is also his first-time hosting, while Lionel Richie made his only musical guest stint on SNL.
