The 938th episode and 8th episode of Saturday Night Live's 48th season premiered on December 10, 2022. It was hosted by actor, comedian, writer, composer, playwright, producer, and musician Steve Martin, and former short-term Ebersol-era (and former SCTV) cast member Martin Short. Together they star in the Hulu's hit mystery comedy-drama series Only Murders in the Building, and the hit 1986 Western comedy film, ¡Three Amigos!, the hit 1991 romantic comedy film, Father of the Bride, and the hit sequel 1995 film Father of the Bride Part II, DreamWorks Animation's 1998 hit classic animated musical film The Prince of Egypt, the Netflix's comedy special, An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life, and they will also resume their “You Won't Believe What They Look Like Today!” Comedy Tour next year. Singer-songwriter, producer and musician Brandi Carlile was the musical guest, and she performed "The Story" for her first set and "You and Me on the Rock" with Lucius for her second. This is Steve Martin' and Martin Short’s 16th time and 4th time hosting, respectively. This is also Brandi Carlile's 2nd musical guest appearance on SNL.
This is the first time since the January 31, 2009 episode, the fourteenth episode of SNL’s 34th season, with musical guest Jason Mraz that Steve Martin hosted SNL. This is also the second time that he has sharing co-hosting duties on SNL with his longtime friend and fellow comedian Martin Short since the December 6, 1986 episode, the sixth episode of SNL's 12th season, along with original (and former) cast member and !Three Amigos co-star Chevy Chase, thus making Chase the former five-time host and the first original (and former) cast member to enter the Five-Timers Club, with musical guest Randy Newman, thus making him a former five-time musical guest.
The last time Short hosted the show for the 3rd time and (his first appearance in 10 years and 1 day) was on December 15, 2012, the tenth episode and the Christmas show of SNL's 38th season, with musical guest Paul McCartney, the former Beatle member, English music legend and singer-songwriter.
Brandi Carlile's previously made her musical guest (and SNL) debut on the October 23, 2021 episode, the fourth episode and the Halloween-themed show of SNL's 47th season, hosted by longtime former cast member Jason Sudeikis, star of the Apple TV+'s hit sports comedy-drama series Ted Lasso.
This is also marked the twenty-second episode to have multiple hosts on SNL and the first since December 19, 2015, the ninth episode and Christmas-themed show of SNL's 41st season, hosted by longtime former cast members and Weekend Update anchors Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, thus making Fey a former five-time host and the third former cast member, as well as the first former female cast member to enter the Five-Timers Club, with musical guest Bruce Springsteen and The E-Street Band.
The goodnights speech for Steve Martin and Martin Short is in the following: "We Have a Great Time Hosting "Saturday Night Live", (Cheers and Applause), Thanks to Brandi Carlile, Selena Gomez, and Kieran Culkin, and This Brilliant Cast, Lorne Michaels, We Love You.
