The seventh episode of Season 3 and the 53rd episode of Saturday Night Live premiered on December 10, 1977, hosted by actress, singer, director, and screenwriter Mary Kay Place, star of the satirical soap opera series Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, and the hit films Bound for Glory, New York, New York, The Big Chill, Smooth Talk, Captain Ron, and The Rainmaker, with musical guest Willie Nelson, a country singer, guitarist and songwriter.

This was Mary Kay Place's only time hosting and Willie Nelson made his musical guest debut on SNL.
