The 964th episode and 16th episode of Saturday Night Live's 49th season premiered on April 6, 2024, hosted by longtime former cast member Kristen Wiig, star of the hit films The Brothers Solomon, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Pretty Bird, Adventureland, Extract, MacGruber, Paul, Bridesmaids, Friends with Kids, Revenge for Jolly!, Girl Most Likely, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Hateship, Loveship, The Skeleton Twins, Welcome to Me, A Deadly Adoption, Nasty Baby, The Martian, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Zoolander 2, Ghostbusters, Masterminds, Downsizing, Mother!, Wonder Woman 1984, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, Where'd You Go, Bernadette, and A Boy Called Christmas and the hit animated films, Sausage Party, DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon trilogy and the Despicable Me franchise, and she was also the star and executive producer of Apple TV+'s new period comedy miniseries Palm Royale, with English singer and songwriter Raye as the musical guest. Longtime former cast member Kristen Wiig returned to Saturday Night Live to hosted for the 5th time and she becomes the fifth former cast member, as well as the second longtime former female cast member to enter the Five-Timers Club, after Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Tina Fey and Will Ferrell. This is Kristen Wiig's 5th hosting stint, thus making Wiig a five-time host, she also becomes the newest member and the fifth former cast member, as well as the second longtime former female cast member to enter The Five-Timers Club. This is also the musical guest debut for Raye on SNL.

Wiig previously hosted SNL 4 times on the following dates: On May 11, 2013, the twentieth (and penultimate) episode, as well as the Mother's Day show of SNL's 38th season, with musical guests Vampire Weekend, an legendary indie rock band, on November 19, 2016, the seventh episode and Thanksgiving-themed show of SNL's 42nd season, with musical guests The xx, on May 9, 2020, the eighteenth episode and the Mother's Day-themed show, which is also the Season 45 finale and the final episode of SNL at Home, with musical guests Boyz II Men, and on December 19, 2020, the ninth episode and the Christmas show of SNL's 46th season, as well as the final episode of 2020, with musical guest Dua Lipa.

Weekend Update with Colin Jost and Michael Che Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the week's biggest news like the women's NCAA Final Four matchup of Iowa vs. UConn becoming the most-viewed women's basketball game with 14.2 million viewers, Jane Goodall celebrating her 90th birthday with 90 dogs. With guests, Earthquake (Marcello Hernández) and Eclipse (Kenan Thompson) stop by the Weekend Update desk to discuss the earthquake that shook the northeast and the solar eclipse, and Aunt Linda (Kristen Wiig) come back to the Weekend Update desk to discussed her takes on the latest hit movies, like Barbie and Oppenheimer.
Go-Karts   Parents (Kristen Wiig, James Austin Johnson) distract their kids (Andrew Dismukes, Chloe Troast) from some bad news by letting him ride the go-karts at an amusement park. Also features Mikey Day.

La Maison Du Bang!   Sonic Pioneers takes a look back at the French music variety show "La Maison Du Bang!" featuring Tipi Tornade (Kristen Wiig). Also features Ego Nwodim as Imani Celeste, Bowen Yang as Jules, Chloe Fineman as Camille, Chloe Troast as Coco Dubois, Andrew Dismukes, Molly Kearney, and James Austin Johnson as Les Garcons du Groove, Kenan Thompson as Delpoleon, and Mikey Day as Spirou.
