The 16th episode of Season 41 and the 803rd episode of Saturday Night Live premieres on April 2, 2016. It was hosted by actor Peter Dinklage, star of the HBO's hit fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, with musical guest Gwen Stefani. This was the 2nd appearance and only time as host on SNL for Peter Dinklage.

This is also the 5th musical guest stint and 3rd solo musical guest appearance for Gwen Stefani on SNL, thus making Stefani a former five-time musical guest.

Gwen Stefani previously made her 4th musical guest stint and made her 2nd solo musical guest appearances on SNL on the following dates: On December 7, 1996, when she was in the rock band No Doubt, as they made their musical guest debut, as well as her musical guest debut on the eighth episode of SNL's 22nd season, hosted by former Ebersol-era and (former SCTV) cast member Martin Short, and on December 15, 2001, the ninth episode and Christmas show of SNL's 27th season, hosted by comedian, actress, television host, writer, and producer Ellen DeGeneres (which they made their 2nd and last musical guest appearance).

On March 19, 2005, the fifteenth episode of SNL's 30th season, hosted by actor Ashton Kutcher, star of the FOX's hit classic sitcom That's 70's Show and on December 9, 2006, the eighth and Holidays-Holidays-themed episode of SNL's 32nd season, hosted by the actress Annette Bening, along with Akon.
