The 17th episode of Season 9 and the 176th episode of Saturday Night Live premiered on April 14, 1984, hosted by the American historian and South Dakota politician who was a U.S. representative and three-term U.S. senator, and the Democratic Party presidential nominee in the 1972 presidential election, George McGovern with musical guest Madness, an English ska and pop band. This was the only time as host for George McGovern and the only musical guest stint on SNL for Madness.
This was the final credited episode for Eddie Murphy (who had officially left the show, nearly two months ago, but the last of many short films he filmed prior to the start of the season, aired on this episode).
